About me;
When I was five, I had my first encounter with an international student. My grandma's Japanese friends were visiting with their daughter, who was also my age. Despite neither of us understanding each other's language, we played together harmoniously and had a great time. This experience could have been the catalyst for my passion for working with people from all over the world.
During my time in university, I studied English Literature and volunteered as a conversation partner for international students to help with their English language skills. One student from Korea taught me the proper way to use chopsticks, which proved useful when I moved to China after graduation to teach at a university and the Wuhan Iron and Steel Company. It was there that I further developed my skills with chopsticks and learned to play ping pong.
Later, I earned an M.A. in English Literature and taught Freshman College Writing at several universities, including the University of Connecticut and Eastern Connecticut State University. I spent a year as a Teaching Assistant at U.C.L.A. before beginning to teach English Language to international students in Westwood, California.
Eventually, I discovered an opportunity to teach the TOEFL. Although this was not something I had previously considered, I realized that students needed clear instructions and strategies for taking the test, as well as a supportive learning environment. In my teaching of the TOEFL, I learned about my students' cultures and traditions and the influence of these on their skill sets. My goal is not only to help students succeed on the test, but also to teach them how to thrive academically in an English-speaking degree program and as critical thinkers in life.
My ultimate goal is to make the TOEFL test less daunting for my students, so they can see the fun and rewarding side of it. I believe that with hard work and dedication, anybody can achieve their goal, and I am proud to assist them on their journey.
As for my background, I hold a Master's degree and a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from the University of Connecticut. I have experience working as a Teaching Assistant at both UCLA and the University of Connecticut, and as a lecturer in English Composition at Eastern Connecticut State University. I have also worked as an online TOEFL teacher at LES Academy and have taught intermediate-advanced levels of English and the TOEFL at Kaplan International in Westwood, CA from 2006-2018.
